Planned Giving

Leave a legacy that allows future generations to experience the joys of dance and music from many cultural traditions!

One of the oldest dance nonprofits in the Twin Cities, Tapestry Folkdance was founded in 1983. Born out of dance groups like Saltari Dance Emporium, built by loyal volunteers, and sustained by long-standing community members, Tapestry has always been committed to celebrating the joys of dance and music from around the world.

Each week, 120+ dancers attend Tapestry program dances. In 2024, over 2,000 individuals attended Tapestry dances and special events. Add to that the over 35 regular rental groups that utilize Tapestry studios, and the impact of our mission ripples even further.

Tapestry envisions people united through the joys of dance and music, fostering stronger, healthier, and more connected communities. We believe in the power of dance to transform lives and brighten our world and are committed to making that happen, one step at a time.

If Tapestry has made an impact on your life, consider making a legacy gift to the dance, music, and community that has moved you.

“Tapestry Folkdance Center has had a deep and lasting impact on us.  We have both been involved in one way or another for over 40 years as a founding board member (John), staff and board member (Lydia), as well as current volunteers and dancers. We met on the dance floor and call Tapestry 'our' dance home and community.   By including Tapestry in our will, we honor an institution that has had a profound effect on our lives in many ways—after all, it’s where we met, where we dance and, when they can, where our children dance.  It’s a simple and impactful way of paying it forward to the place that means so much to us."

John & Lydia

My late wife, Jan, and I met over 50 years ago when we were at the U of Chicago & she was Jan Greenfield.  After we married & moved, first to Palo Alto, then to the Twin Cities, then overseas in Manchester, England, and then back to the Cities we continued to find places to folkdance (international, contra & English).  When Tapestry was aborning we had the conversation about the value of folkdancing in our lives & that value kept on increasing.  We finally donated $1001 (we'd been reading the fairy tale, The One Thousand & One Nights to our small sons) to the founding of Tapestry.

When Jan died in 2014 she left behind the memories of many wonderful experiences at Tapestry as well as many solid Tapestry friends & acquaintances.  I thought that the very best way to honor & to salute her memory would be to fund a free Tapestry contradance in her memory.  Since 2014 I've funded 4 or 5 dances, and I'd like to do a 6th if I can find a time in which to get both of my sons back to the Twin Cities.

Building an Endowment: Ensuring Fiscal Stability

To secure the future of Tapestry Folkdance Center and ensure that its vibrant cultural programs continue to thrive, we invite you to contribute to the establishment of our endowment fund. Your support will not only help maintain the center’s operations but also strengthen its ability to enrich our community with the joy and artistry of dance and music from many cultural traditions. Establishing an endowment fund is one of the most effective ways Tapestry can prepare to withstand temporary declines in revenue, and in better times strengthen the investment in its mission. Endowment funds will allow for the following:

Sustained Financial Stability:

An endowment would provide Tapestry Folkdance Center with a reliable source of income, helping stabilize the organization’s financial footing over time.

Long-Term Planning and Growth:

An endowment allows for strategic long-term planning. It would provide Tapestry with the freedom to undertake significant projects, renovations, or expansions that could otherwise be financially prohibitive.

Preservation of Cultural Heritage:

Tapestry Folkdance Center is a vital hub for preserving and promoting folk dance traditions. An endowment will help ensure Tapestry can continue its mission of cultural preservation and outreach, enriching the community with its programs and events for generations to come.

Increased Community Engagement:

By establishing an endowment, Tapestry Folkdance Center can demonstrate its commitment to long-term sustainability, which can inspire increased support and engagement from the community and potential donors.

Enhanced Program Offerings:

With a stable financial base, Tapestry can expand its program offerings, enhance its educational initiatives, and bring in more diverse and high-quality events and workshops, in turn attracting more participants and audience members, furthering Tapestry’s impact.

Upon celebrating 40 years of existence, Tapestry Folkdance Center is in a strong financial position, with four months of operating funds readily available and an additional eight months of reserves in savings. Additionally, the center has secured future support through bequests from planned giving and has been thoughtfully included in several wills, further enhancing its financial stability. In fact, in 2024, we have enough funds to seed the endowment with $25,000
