What is English Country Dance?
English country dancing is an accessible social dance form with a history going back several centuries. Perhaps you’ve seen a Jane Austen movie with longways sets, partners facing and dancing down the line. This tradition has moved into our own times with old and new choreographies—some serene, others lively—danced to lovely small-ensemble music. It is danced with simple walking or skipping steps in time to the music. All dances are taught and the figures are called to prompt the dancers.

What should I expect?
Every dance is taught and called as you go, with dancers switching partners throughout the night. Everyone is welcome, no partner or experience needed. (The first Sunday evening of the month is especially beginner-friendly!)

What should I wear?
Dress is casual, most people come in loose-fitting or moveable clothing and wear non-marking, smooth soled shoes.

If you have any accessibility needs you'd like addressed by Tapestry Folkdance Center, please let us know by emailing staff@tapestryfolkdance.org.

This 40-minute video introduces English Country Dancing. It teaches some of the basic moves found in many English Country dances; explains the structure of the dance; and entertains you with information about the history and practice of English country dancing from Country Dance & Song Society.
