Explore Hungarian and Transylvanian social dance traditions! Learn csárdás, partner dance basics, and regional folk dances in a joyful, community-centered class series.
Step into the tradition of the táncház ("dance house"), the grassroots movement born in 1970s Budapest when young dancers and musicians traveled to remote villages in Transylvania to learn dance and music directly from the source, then brought that living tradition home to share it with anyone willing to learn.
These classes aren't about memorizing choreography for a stage as much as they are about joining a centuries-old social dance tradition the way it's always been passed on: by watching, listening, and dancing alongside others, with live (or authentic recorded) folk music setting the rhythm. You'll learn how to csárdás, the basics of dancing as a couple, and even a few line dances. The material will showcase regional variations from throughout Hungary and Transylvania (including Kalotaszeg, Mezőség, Dunantul, and more), each with their own distinct character and dialect.
All ages and experience levels welcome, no partner needed. Whether you're connecting with your heritage, curious about a new folk culture, or just looking for a joyful, community-centered way to move, the táncház welcomes all levels. Come for the dancing, stay for the music, the community, and the deep sense of connection to a tradition still very much alive.
About the Instructors
Matthew LaCourse (he/him) and Marita Pelecis (she/her) are performing artists and instructors with Ethnic Dance Theatre. For the past decade, they have specialized in the study of the “Táncház” movement and the variety of dance styles incorporated within, and have taken the opportunity to study these materials with world-class instructors directly from Hungary and Transylvania. Through their work alongside the wonderful Szászká String Band, they have developed a teaching style that focuses on breaking down complicated motions into accessible movements, allowing for a variety of skill levels to process, understand, and grow through the dance. In this, they hope to convey how a deep appreciation for these traditional art forms can enhance the fun of communal embrace.
