INTERNATIONAL FOLK DANCE
|
Our community includes dancers with many levels of experience. Here’s some practical information for first-timers or newcomers to International Friday:
- Go easy on yourself when learning new dances – try not to compare yourself to others who may have more experience! The fun and challenging thing about international dance is the variety of rhythm, time signatures and patterns.
- If you’re not sure about joining in a dance during the request session, ask another dancer if it’s easier or more challenging to catch on to.
- For dances done in a semicircular line, most of the dances move counterclockwise, with a leader at the head of the line. When you join the line at an end, check with your neighbor to make sure you’re not in the leader position. Yipes! That would be a challenge. Being in the middle is also a good choice.
- You are always welcome to dance “behind the line” of more experienced dancers rather than in the line. It’s a great way to learn, and often easier.
- Is there a right way and a wrong way to hold hands? The main thing is – easy does it – not too tight a grip! When learning something new, we tend to tense up – so much we squeeze our neighbor’s hand. Ouch!
- Some dances involve arm movements. When focusing on figuring out what to do with your feet, it can be overwhelming to add arms. Just relax your arms and let your neighbors take the lead. Worry about the arms later.
- Join us on the first Friday of the month, or any other Friday!
IMPORTANT ADMISSION UPDATE FOR TAPESTRY PROGRAM DANCES: As a requirement of our insurance, starting in February 2024 ALL dance participants MUST sign a Participant Release, Indemnification, and Hold Harmless Agreement. Individuals only need to sign it once, but they MUST sign in order to participate. You can view the Agreement ahead of time HERE.
