Tom van Deusen has learned from some of the best dance callers in the country, starting in California in 1998. He is an avid dancer and has attended more than thirty dance camps across the country. A filmmaker by trade, Tom also does sound mixer duty for some of Tapestry’s dances.
Ken Steffensen (fiddle) and Pat O’Loughlin (banjo, concertina, percussion) have played for umpteen contra dances together, and with Joel Petersen backing them up, are having a great time trotting out some new material and rhythms to entertain Tapestry’s dancers.

Tapestry Gypsy Dance (9:30 am - 11:00 am)
Fire in Our Feet: Balkan Roma (Gypsy) Dance
Saturdays in January at Tapestry Folkdance Center 9:30am – 11am
Single sessions $8 regular, $6 members, $5 students
Explore the spirit of collective joy and rhythmic passion found in Roma (Gypsy) dance from the Balkans. Develop your ability to express yourself through dance.
This class will help you develop the three qualities that make anyone, regardless of ability or technique, a great dancer: musical sensitivity, a 100% commitment to each movement, and an ability to reveal feeling or your soul's passion.
Balkan Roma music and dance, like jazz, can be a container for the breadth of human experience. The rhythm and simple steps danced in a circle create a structure while also allowing for individual expression.
A typical class begins with a guided, improvised warm-up. You will then learn some basic traditional Balkan Roma dances. The dances are gentle yet generate a lot of heat; plan on sweating. With a party spirit we will then improvise within the form.
Come find freedom within the circle and burn up the dance floor.
Dress comfortably with clothes that allow you to do floor work. We will dance to music from many contemporary sources. A great album that can accompany nearly all the dances from this class is Fire in the Feet by Xenos, available on iTunes.
Emily Jarrett Hughes dances for the joy of it. The passion and rhythm of traditional village dances are the heartbeat of her life. Emily is particularly fond of the simplest of village dances which allow for the deepest enjoyment by the dancers. She teaches dance as a means for awakening people's creative power to consciously transform self, community and the world. Emily has choreographed and performed in both modern and folk dance styles and is a current member of Ethnic Dance Theatre.

Dancers can choose dances taught both recently, or any time since the beginning of Tapestry, since they are alphabetically listed in a notebook available to dancers - so what gets requested is a mix of old and new. We also do Israeli dances, and couple dances from (western) Europe and the Americas - but you don't need to bring a partner.

Contra-Light Of The Moon And Beau Farmer (7:30 pm - 11:00 pm)
Music: Light of the Moon Caller: Beau Farmer
Beau retains some of his native southern accent, making his friendly and accessible calling even more charming for us northerners. He has many years of calling experience, working with diverse groups, and is a Tapestry favorite.
Light of the Moon are Robin Fox, fiddle and accordion; Nick Jordan, mandolin, flute & whistle; Mike Keyes, guitar and banjo; and Philip (Pierre) Rampi, bass and percussion. They excel at old time tunes and love to switch instruments, giving us lots of variety in sound.
Saturday Contra Dances Time: 7:30-11pm Beginner walk-through lesson 7:30-8pm. Live music from 8-11pm!
Admission: $10, $8 members, $7 students, free admission to kids 13 and under
In a contra dance, the dance figures are similar to those of Old-time square dancing except the figures are made up of lines of leaders and followers facing each other. Many of the regular Tapestry contra bands play Old-time music (similar to bluegrass), but the music on any given Saturday contra may reflect music traditions from New England, French Canadian, Irish, Scottish, Cape Breton and modern compositions.
