Tapestry Techno Contra With DJ Improper (7:30 pm - 10:30 pm)
August 23: Techno Contra with dJ improper and caller Ted Hodapp
What is Techno Contra?
The Tehcno Contra has been described as "glow-stick fueled, high energy Contra with a twist" and "Traditional American dancing to club music". Techno Contra is a catch phrase for high energy Contra dancing to modern music accompanied by special effects lighting. The music could be what you hear on the radio, or any other modern genre. The tempo is typically more lively than a traditional Contra dance, and the length of time a dance lasts may vary from signle songs to medleys. Techno Contra conveys energy and club dancing even though much of the music may be pop, celtic fusion, or electronica rather than strictly techno. The fact that a number of these dances contain low lighting lends to the club atmosphere.
dJ improper has a passion for music, but is also an avid Contra dancer. He has contra danced for his entire life and is the current resident dJ for the Folklore Society of Greater Washington's "Contra Sonic" event, which features traditional American folk dancing to electronica dance music.
Glow sticks provided!
