First Saturdays
Time: 7:30-11:30pm
Dance lesson 7:30-8pm, music starts at 8pm!

After 17 years, Trailer Trash is enjoying its place in Minnesota musical history. They have performed at Jesse Ventura's Innaugural Ball at the Target Center, played the opening of the new Guthrie Theater, and have provided the soundtrack to hundreds of Twin Cities courtships and wedding receptions. The group is known for playing country music, but the band can swing, rock and groove with many other styles from the American hit parade. Wear a cowboy hat to the dance and enter to win a prize!
First Saturday dances offer a different style of music and dance each month at Tapestry. What stays the same each month is live music by local bands and the dance lesson at the start of the night at 7:30pm.

Contra Dance: Pat O'Loughlin & Friends, W/ Caller Beau Farmer (7:30 pm - 11:00 pm)
2nd, 3rd, and 4th Saturday Contra Dances
Time: 7:30 - 11pm
Cost: $10 general /$8 for members / $7 high school & college students
Dancers younger than high school get in free.
Beginner walk-through lesson at 7:30, Music starts at 8pm
In a contra dance, a leader known as a caller teaches for 30 minutes before the music for the dance begins at 8pm. During this introductory “walk-through” period, participants learn the dance by walking through the steps and formations, following the caller’s instructions. The band begins at 8pm.
The dance figures of a contra dance are similar to those of Old-time square dancing except the figures are made up of lines of leaders and followers facing each other. These dances are lively social, easy to learn, and because each dance may last 5min, they can be aerobic. Although you will dance with a partner, it isn't necessary to come with one. All dances are taught and are usually done in "long-way sets" (partners facing in long lines down the hall). Please check out the calendar for a listing of Contra bands and callers.
Many of the regular Tapestry contra bands play Old-time music (similar to bluegrass), but the music on any given Saturday contra may reflect music traditions from New England, French Canadian, Irish, Scottish, Cape Breton and modern compositions.

RSCDS (7:30 pm - 10:00 pm)
Tapestry rental partner: Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS)
What is Scottish Country Dancing?
Scottish country dancing (SCD) is social group dancing, not to be confused with Highland dancing, which is a performance-oriented and often competitive dance form. First popularized in Scotland during the 18th century, SCD was revived and standardized by the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) during the 1920s, and has been going strong ever since. While often called the "traditional ballroom dancing of Scotland," it doesn't much resemble modern ballroom dancing. Instead you'll notice a lot more similarities with contra, square, and English country dancing. Like those dance forms, SCD is done with partners in sets of couples, and uses many of the same formations or figures, though they might have different names. Most Scottish country dances are done in "longwise" sets (like contra dances) of four couples. A few are done in square sets.
The music of SCD, featuring lively jigs and reels, stately Strathspeys, and elegant airs, is often what first attracts people, and much of it may be familiar to those who do other forms of folk and country dancing. Many traditional contra dances, for example, are done to Scottish tunes. However, SCD has its own characteristic styling that sets it apart, with footwork/steps being one of the most obvious differences. The Scots were friendly with the French, and Scottish country dancing was heavily influenced by ballet, evidence of which can be seen in the steps and even in some of the names of the figures.
Although the RSCDS Twin Cities Branch is not a Tapestry program, our relationship with Tapestry goes back many years. RSCDS has shared space with Tapestry since the mid-1990s and has always shared the goal of creating opportunities for sharing the joy of dance and music. Our main activity is weekly classes, held Monday nights at Tapestry from September through June. For most of us, however, the informal social dance evenings, usually with live music, and two formal balls, are the real highlights of each year. We also do quite a bit of performing at various venues around the Twin Cities.
Who Does Scottish Country Dancing? SCD is popular around the world! Despite the origins and continued connection with Scotland, most Scottish country dancers aren't actually Scottish. There are groups across Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand, and places as far flung as Japan and South Africa. Here in the Twin Cities, the RSCDS community includes about 80 members, ranging in age from teens to seniors and with previous dance experience ranging from zero to extensive. Fer Horn, Ed Stern, and Jamie Berg are among familiar Tapestry international folk and contra dancers you might see on Monday evenings.
Want to Give Scottish Country Dancing a try?
New dancers are welcome any time but are encouraged to start in late-September or mid-February, which are the times of the year when we have classes that specifically focus on the basics. Dancers who are experienced in contra or English country dancing will probably not have much trouble picking up the basic formations (though there are some definite styling differences) but the footwork can take some time to learn.
RSCDS will be kicking off our series of Fall basics classes with an open house event, Bring a Friend Night on Monday, September 19th, 7:30 to 9:30pm at Tapestry. Wear comfortable clothes and soft-soled shoes (no heels, please). There's no need to come with a partner. It's free and so are the first six weeks of classes, which start the following Monday. So what do you have to lose? Give Scottish country dancing a try!

Contra Dance: Mary DuShane & Bob Walser, Caller Tom Van Deusen (7:30 pm - 11:00 pm)

Minnesota Traditional Morris (MTM) (7:00 pm - 10:30 pm)
Tapestry Rental Partner
Minnesota Traditional Morris (MTM) is a men's performance group doing dances in the English Cotswold Morris tradition. Our performance season begins on May Day, dancing the sun up, and continues into early October. Morris dancers are known for wearing white, with bells on their legs and colored ribbons, vests or sashes. Most of the dances are sets of 6 or 8 dancers, waving handkerchiefs or clashing sticks. Morris dance is a fun combination of performance and social dance. It can be graceful and powerful, precise and athletic, serious and goofy.
MTM has a long history with Tapestry. Many of you know Ed Stern as a teacher of International, Scottish and English Country dances. Ed is one of the founding members of MTM and has been an active leader in the group for 35 years. Tom Barnes, who did most of the construction on the current Tapestry building, has also been a longtime member of MTM. Ted Hodapp, well known as a Contra caller, continues as an active member of MTM despite living in Washington, DC the past several years. Many other MTM'ers are also active members of Tapestry. And of course you can see us at practice at Tapestry on Tuesday nights most of the year.
The BBC recently interviewed several Minnesota Morris dancers on their Americana broadcast. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b011j43n#synopsis (have patience, they get to the Morris dancers at about 23 minutes 40 seconds).
MTM has a website at
http://www.minnesotatraditionalmorris.org/index.htm
If you want to see us, we have some upcoming gigs:
June 25 – Menomonie, Wisconsin, various places around town
July 4 - Edina parade and Richfield parade
July 16 – Morgan Creek Vineyards
http://www.morgancreekvineyards.com/
Weekends August 20 to October 2 – Minnesota Renaissance Festival http://www.renaissancefest.com/MRF/
There is a large Morris and English dance community in the Twin Cities. MTM is a men's group focused on Cotswold Morris; but there are several other teams in town providing opportunities for everyone in various English folk dance styles including Cotswold Morris, Border Morris, Long Sword, Rapper Sword, and Clogging.
