DESCRIPTION:2nd\, 3rd\, and 4th Saturday Contra Dances\nTime: 7:30 - 11pmCo
 st: $10 general /$8 for members / $7 high school &amp\; college students\n
Beginner walk-through lesson at 7:30\, Music starts at 8pm\nIn a contra da
nce\, a leader known as a caller teaches for 30 minutes before the music f

riod\, participants learn the dance by walking through the steps and forma
tions\, following the caller’s instructions. The band begins at 8pm.\nTh
e dance figures of a contra dance are similar to those of Old-time square
dancing except the figures are made up of lines of leaders and followers f
acing each other. These dances are lively social\, easy to learn\, and bec
ause each dance may last 5min\, they can be aerobic. Although you will dan
ce with a partner\, it isn't necessary to come with one. All dances are ta
ught and are usually done in &quot\;long-way sets&quot\; (partners facing
in long lines down the hall). Please check out the calendar for a listing
of Contra bands and callers.\nMany of the regular Tapestry contra bands pl
ay Old-time music (similar to bluegrass)\, but the music on any given Satu
rday contra may reflect music traditions from New England\, French Canadia
n\, Irish\, Scottish\, Cape Breton and modern compositions.

DESCRIPTION:August 23: Techno Contra with dJ improper and caller Ted Hodapp
\nWhat is Techno Contra?\nThe Tehcno Contra has been described as &quot\;g
 low-stick fueled\, high energy Contra with a twist&quot\; and &quot\;Tradi
tional American dancing to club music&quot\;. Techno Contra is a catch phr
ase for high energy Contra dancing to modern music accompanied by special
effects lighting. The music could be what you hear on the radio\, or any o
ther modern genre. The tempo is typically more lively than a traditional C
ontra dance\, and the length of time a dance lasts may vary from signle so
ngs to medleys. Techno Contra conveys energy and club dancing even though
much of the music may be pop\, celtic fusion\, or electronica rather than
strictly techno. The fact that a number of these dances contain low lighti
ng lends to the club atmosphere. \n\ndJ improper has a passion for music\
, but is also an avid Contra dancer. He has contra danced for his entire l
ife and is the current resident dJ for the Folklore Society of Greater Was
 hington's &quot\;Contra Sonic&quot\; event\, which features traditional Am
erican folk dancing to electronica dance music. \nGlow sticks provided!\n
 Admission: $10\, $8 members\, $7 students\, free admission to kids 13 and
